28 Sep Digital solutions at work in Lesotho: A quick look at the Methaka app
We’re excited to see our digital solutions at work and supporting a long-standing client of Mainlevel: the Participatory Initiative for Social Accountability (PISA) by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Lesotho.
Our consultants David Haasner and Daniel Brumund just returned from their fifth mission, from 17 to 21 September, to check the status of PISA’s digital M&E system, online communication channels and Methaka, an app for youth volunteers. One more highlight was a workshop with local government representatives to test the prototype of an SMS-based system that is developing to support their engagement with citizens through information-sharing, feedback and awareness-raising.
South Africa and Lesotho have predominantly young populations, with approximately half of South African and Basotho citizens below the age of 25. The ability of these young citizens to reach their full potential is limited by the challenges facing their countries – widespread unemployment, high rates of violence and crime (in South Africa) or a lack of opportunities to participate in socio-political processes (in Lesotho). Yet far from being defined by their challenges, many young South Africans and Basotho have a strong desire to play a positive part in improving the communities they are living in. The idea for Methaka/YouthActs as an innovative digital solution was jointly developed by the VCP and PISA programmes and is supported by the GIZ Innovation Fund, a company-wide initiative to foster creativity and innovation in the digital world.
The Methaka app is designed to guide and support trained members of the Methaka Youth Volunteer Network all over Lesotho to plan and implement peer-to-peer activities which focus on civic education and will have a positive impact on the development of their communities. The Methaka Youth Volunteer Network is best described as a peer network of passionate, informed, and activated young people that develop, exchange and implement activities that contribute towards civic education in Lesotho. We at Mainlevel are delighted to be a part of this digitalisation assignment from the conceptualisation to implementation.
